In the Championship round of the 20th Annual WyoTech Brute Horsepower Shootout, reigning champ Todd Erickson decided to push it to the limit. After pumping out 580 HP in 2009, Erickson wanted to go for 700!

In the qualifying rounds, he had already put up a 528 HP dyno run with his 94 Kawasaki ZX-11 Turbo. Armed with two-stage nitrous, Erickson set out to smash that mark during Friday’s Championship run.

Once the bike hit 517, this is what happened…

The final day of our Daytona Bike Week 2010 coverage was jam-packed with action!

In the Championship rounds of the 20th Annual WyoTech Brute Horsepower Shootout, we saw some awesome numbers, especially in the Unlimited Import class. Julio Shaheen was this year’s ultimate champion; he pumped out 569.69 HP on his 2002 Suzuki Hayabusa. His previous best had only been in the 480s!

Last year’s heavy hitter, Todd Erickson, had been putting up big numbers all week in Qualifications. In the Championship round, Erickson decided to pull out all the stops and shoot for an unprecedented 700 HP! He prepped his 1994 Kawasaki ZX-11 with 2-stage nitrous oxide and throttled it hard. Unfortunately, he threw a rod and his engine completely blew at 517 HP! Luckily, no one got hurt and we’re sure Erickson will be back next year for revenge.

Wolfgang Grasser is, now, a 6-time WyoTech Brute Horsepower Shootout champion. On Friday, he powered his 2003 Harley Davidson FXR with a 98.6ci V-Twin motor to 183.42 HP, claiming his sixth straight Horsepower Shootout victory. That works out to around 1.9 horsepower per cubic inch! Wow! We got a chance to catch up with Wolfgang after his win.

“We had to do 100 percent of the machine work on the cylinder heads…I’ve probably got several hundred hours just in the cylinder heads…We’ve been working on this package for 4 years,” Grasser told us. “The motor itself: we probably have an excess of $35 grand just in the motor. It’s our pride and joy and a representation of what we do. It’s a rollin’ business car.” In addition to being a sleek black, custom-built Harley, it’s street legal!

What makes these victories especially sweet is that Wolfgang is, in a sense, one of our own. He graduated from American Motorcycle Institute (AMI) in 1990; American Motorcycle Institute – Daytona Beach Campus became WyoTech in 2006. He is a Motorcycle Technology graduate who specialized in Harley-Davidson. Congrats, Wolfgang!

Check out some footage of his Championship-winning run and a post-competition interview on our WyoTech YouTube Channel.

On Day 2 of our Daytona Bike Week 2010 coverage, we hung out at the Brute Horsepower Shootout at WyoTech Daytona, checked out some of the craziness at Destination Daytona and Main Street, and popped into the Daytona Flat Track at the end of the night for the AMA Grand National Championships.

After listening to a couple of our WyoTech master technicians give a brief lecture on Motorcycle Preventative Maintenance, we headed over to the Horsepower Shootout to check out any Leaderboard changes. The last day of qualification for the 20th Annual WyoTech Brute Horsepower Shootout got us geared up for the championships on Friday! One of our Unlimited Import entries (a 94 Kawasaki ZX11) actually hit over 528 horsepower today! While we were at the Dyno complex on the WyoTech-Daytona campus, a student named Mark let us sneak a peek at one of the student projects: Custom-built WyoTech quad that was completely built by the students. The quad went for a spin and tested its burnout capabilities before jumping on the dyno machine for a horsepower test.

In the afternoon, we cruised down to Destination Daytona and Main Street where the streets and sidewalks are wall-to-wall packed full of booths, biker enthusiasts and sweet-looking rides. Then we headed down to the Daytona International Speedway’s Flat Track to watch some of the AMA Grand National Championship races. Sammy Halbert was crowned the Pro Flat Track champion in a tight race that saw a lot of position changes.

Make sure you catch our final podcast video where we’ll wrap-up the 20th Annual Brute Horsepower Shootout and give you an inside look at the work that goes into getting vehicles ready for the Daytona 200.

The annual WyoTech Brute Horsepower Shootout is a competition we hold each year at our Daytona campus during Daytona Bike Week. Contestants come from across the country to participate for ultimate bragging rights in a multiple-day competition. Riders in 16 different categories hook their motorcycles up to a dynamometer machine (“dyno” for short) at WyoTech-Daytona’s campus for the opportunity to measure their bike’s output for the right to be named Champion.

This year marks the 20th annual Horsepower Shootout and we’ve already had some great results. Click here for a PDF of results through Tuesday at 2pm.

Qualifying rounds are from 10am-4pm Monday March 1 through Thursday March 4 with the Championship rounds on Friday March 5.
