We’ve all seen the movie mechanic — the one who seems to spend his day in coveralls wiping a greasy wrench. It looks slow-paced and easy. But the reality for today’s professional mechanic is that to do the job right, they’ve got to approach it like a pro. Here’s a snapshot of what you can expect as a mechanic.

The Morning

Getting in around 7 or 8 a.m . (depending on your job), your first order of business is to look at the schedule for the day to see what jobs will need to be done. After that, you may take a quick inventory to see if you need to stock up on supplies or parts.

The Workday

Your day will often feel like a juggling act between scheduled repairs, troubleshooting over the phone and greeting customers. The pace can be fast, and your workload heavy. A good mechanic is also a busy one.

The Day’s End

Before knocking off for the day, you’ll need to police your area, putting away tools, cleaning up spills and more. Everything needs to be cleaned up to make sure you can start the next morning fresh. And don’t forget to work up a list of the next day’s jobs.

Being an auto mechanic can be rewarding, but also challenging work. However, with the right training like what you’ll find at WyoTech, you can turn it into a great career.

Becoming an auto mechanic may be one of the most exciting decisions in the life of a new WyoTech student. Whether small engine repair like motorcycles, traditional car engine repair, or larger diesel engine repair, the work often resembles a puzzle game. Sometimes the puzzle has an easy resolution, but other times, it may take more intensive study and research to find the right answers. Regardless of the outcome, it’s the process ⎯ and working with cool cars ⎯ that makes this industry so exciting.

Additionally, it’s important for automotive service technicians and mechanics to keep up with the changing technologies and repair techniques. Starting with strong automotive technician training can be the best preparation. WyoTech has a number of student finance planners available to work with students and to help find the most appropriate resources to pay for their career training program.

Financial aid options, including student loans, grants, military student aid and scholarships, are available for those who qualify. However, students focusing on any of the automotive transportation industry-related programs may benefit from a WTI Foundation scholarship, if approved.

Any student who is enrolled in a transportation technology program at WyoTech, and who meets the eligibility requirements outlined on the application form, is eligible to apply for a WTI Foundation scholarship.* Qualifying awards range from $500 to $3,000 to be applied toward a student’s tuition balance at WyoTech.

At WTI Foundation, the mission is to award academic scholarships to individuals pursuing post-secondary degrees in the fields of automotive, collision/refinishing (similar to auto body work), diesel, marine, and motorcycle technology. Invest in the future of the transportation service industry by learning more about the WTI Foundation scholarship, an independent 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. Programs vary by campus.

* Applying for a scholarship does not guarantee an award. If you have already started your program at WyoTech, you do not qualify for this scholarship.
